Royal Academy, Spain and the Hispanic World

“Caspicara” - painted sculptures which are gorgeous and very melodramatic. Really intense religious depictions of suffering. Particularly love the little devil - flames, screaming and a sense of noise
Sense of heft to the older works (medieval / colonial) - lots of reds, browns, greys and blacks (religious piety / lack of celebration here?)
Was really interesting to see the Spanish culture sort of meet the indigenous artworks and merge together
Indigenous artworks could be a real inspiration (not to be a culture vulture) - gorgeous colour and sense of life in the patterns - depicting religious scenes + it feels as there there was a clear reverence of nature
Modern paintings still retain this sense of vibrancy and colour - although most felt slightly happier - use of colours was really strong in the final room and
Almost felt a sense of sadness at these really youthful images - children on beaches, smiling family portraits, horses and flowers and young women, all of whom are dead now (sorry to be bleak)
