Drawing and conceptual practice reflections

I created 1 drawn study mapping out the brickwork and the mould between the cracks using tape and oil pastels. I had also created an accompanying poem based on the founding date of the foundation building as a grammar 140 years ago
I did enjoy the morning task - however I think I find it difficult to think in a completely abstract way so it was difficult for me to not think too figuratively - this is something I will have to work on if I move into fine art
What went well - I really enjoyed playing around with mark making and texture. It was also really interesting to look at drawing as its own art form and not just a means to an end
How did my research help me - looking at a lot of the art at the Tate helped give me examples of what kind of work is more conceptual and helped me understand the difference between drawing and illustration. For example Gordon Bennett’s etchings carry a deeper meaning that is reflected through the mark making, colour, text etc - clearly a reflection of his personal life, opinions and artistic vision
