Final reflections

Reflections on whether I feel like piece is successful:

I really loved taking religious imagery from the national gallery - something so melodramatic and heightened about each piece.
I’ve found it’s really helped to inform my own work - not only in the imagery that I’ve used (dramatic expressions and naked bodies and biblical imagery) but also in the framing and compositions of pieces. Many of the works in the gallery are broken up into parts with sections off at the side (especially the Flemish painters) showcasing lots of different scenes
I also looked at a lot of the landscape pieces and how they are broken up into thirds - often the sides would be busier and the centre would have more of a focus on the land.
Basically all in all. I have learned that looking at past painters pieces is the smartest thing to do. It provides imagery and ideas for compositions / framing / colour choices etc etc. It was really fun to blend older ideas with my own.
Music also played a big part in this project (but in a very different way from the last pieces - was listening to eerier classical music and really trying to get into the atmosphere of the pieces at the national (rather than the 80s funk / dance music of the last project))
The crit was really helpful and I got a lot of really helpful pointers to new artists and imagery from everyone (James Ensorb, Triptychs, German Expressionism in Cinema (Cabinet of Dr Caligari), degenerate art movement, Stanley Spencer, Sadie Coles Gallery Monstrosity show, and a show at the Royal Academy of Spanish and Hispanic art)

However - I do want to think of neater ways to present my work. In addition, I want to use the next pieces to get back into painting on objects / thinking about printmaking etc as this was a slight deviation from the last piece.
