Thoughts on Gallery Visit

Having visited all the painting gallery recommendations, the two that stuck out to me the most were Terry Winters and Cecily Brown. I loved the vibrant colours that both artists used so will definitely be using these two for my written assessment. Brown's work is wonderfully fluid and loose. Her brushstrokes feel really fluid and natural and I really like that there are some smaller figurative elements weaved into the larger more abstract composition. I will say that some of her compositions are weaker than others (perhaps due to too much looseness, especially when she chooses to use softer colour in my opinion). However, on the whole I really feel I could benefit from painting in a similar more freeing way.

On the other hand, Winters' works are really natural but also seem a lot more structured and the patterns are a lot more thought out. They almost look like cells? or certainly have some biological inspirations? I love Winters' use of colour and texture and feel these will be the main takeaways I get from his work. Seeing the pieces up close, you really get a feel for the kind of gritty texture of the cloth that Winters has painted on. This is then built on top of with thick layers of paint. I do really enjoy his composition but do feel they are a bit abstract so perhaps not as useful for when thinking about my own work.
